Life has a way of surprising us with moments that test our beliefs, stretch our understanding, and reveal gifts we never imagined we had. Allow me to share a series of experiences in my life—moments that reaffirmed my faith and left me in awe of the divine power working through the simplest things.
It was a quiet morning in 2005, the kind of morning when the world feels still, and the day has yet to unfold. I had just woken up when I heard my cousin, Angelie Alibay, calling out my nickname, “Dodo!” Her voice was urgent, cutting through the morning calm as she shouted my name four times. Curious and concerned, I quickly made my way to her house.
Angelie met me at the door, her eyes red and irritated, tears streaming uncontrollably. She looked distressed and pleaded with me to help her. She explained that her eyes had been bothering her since the night before and wouldn’t stop watering. Desperate, she instructed me to gather fresh guava shoots and leaves. She then asked me to chew the leaves, mix them with saliva, and place the mixture over her closed eyes.
I hesitated for a moment, unsure if this would work, but something inside me urged me to follow her instructions. Without questioning further, I obeyed. I gently placed the guava mixture on her eyes as she instructed. By that afternoon, something miraculous happened—her eyes were completely healed.
That moment stayed with me. I couldn’t fully explain what had happened, but it planted a seed of awareness in my heart: perhaps there was something extraordinary about my ability to help others heal.
Fast forward to 2007, while I was working at NCCC Mall of Davao, a colleague named Bea Grace, a promodiser from Monde Nissin, was suffering from severe stomach pain. She explained that it might be her peptic ulcer acting up. She was visibly distressed, clutching her stomach and occasionally vomiting. Watching her suffer, I felt an overwhelming sense of pity and a strong desire to help.
I asked her to stand up, and without hesitation, I placed three fingers in my mouth, gathered saliva, and made the sign of the cross on her stomach. Within a minute, she felt relief. Bea looked at me, amazed, but I asked her not to tell anyone about what had happened.
Similar situations followed, but this time, they were closer to home. My children, Nyzille Kate and Norville Kent, experienced stomach pain on different occasions. Remembering the relief I had given to others, I repeated the same method: placing my saliva on their stomachs in the form of a cross. Amazingly, their pain subsided each time.
Over the years, this “healing instinct” became a part of my life. I’ve kept it a secret for the most part, not wanting unnecessary attention or distractions. But what amazes me the most is how my daughter, Nyzille, has adopted this practice herself. When she experiences discomfort, she does what I taught her—placing saliva on the affected area—and finds relief.
A Reflection of Faith
Looking back, I see these experiences not as mere coincidences but as divine interventions. God works in mysterious ways, often through the simplest things, to remind us of His power. The Bible says in James 5:14-15, “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up.”
This verse reminds us that faith and obedience to God can lead to healing and miracles, even in the most unexpected ways. It’s not about the act itself but the faith behind it and the belief that God can use anyone and anything as an instrument of His grace.
A Challenge to You
I share this story not to glorify myself but to inspire you to look for the miracles in your own life. Have you ever experienced a moment when faith led to healing or breakthroughs? Perhaps you’ve dismissed it as luck or coincidence.
I challenge you today to trust God more in your daily struggles. Be open to His ways, no matter how unconventional they may seem. And if you feel called to help someone, even in small ways, don’t hesitate. You never know how your actions, rooted in faith and compassion, can impact someone else’s life.
Remember, miracles happen every day. Sometimes, they come in the form of answered prayers, a kind word, or even a simple act of faith. Keep your heart open, and you may just witness the extraordinary in the ordinary.
