DAILY BREAD: July 18, 2025 / Proverbs 18: 22 - Finding the Right Person

Hello, dear readers!

Today, I invite you to reflect with me on one of the most personal and prayerful decisions we ever make in life—finding the right person to be our spouse. As a blogger who preaches God's Word, I believe that sharing real stories, not just scriptures, brings the Bible alive in our hearts. That’s why today, I want to begin this devotion with my own story—how God shaped my journey toward marriage.

🙏 My Story: From Ideal Prayers to God’s Perfect Plan

When I was young, I often prayed to God for a spouse who met all my ideals—a beautiful, intelligent, smart woman, a model in all aspects. I thought I knew exactly what I needed. Every time I met a woman who matched those standards, I would pray, “Lord, let her be the one.” Yet, each time, that person never became mine.

At the age of 21, I courted a girl who accepted me. It felt like a blessing, but after just a year, our relationship ended due to long distance. It broke my heart and humbled my prayers. From that point forward, I stopped asking God for my will to be done. Instead, I said, “Lord, let Your will be done.”

Then, at age 25, God introduced me to a woman who surpassed all my expectations—but she did not yet share my faith. Many would’ve seen it as a red flag, but I took it as a challenge. I chose to love her and live out my faith before her. Eventually, by God’s grace, she came to the Lord—and now we are blessed with two beautiful children.

I share this not to boast, but to testify: God’s plan is always better than ours. His timing is perfect, His choice is wise, and His purpose in our relationships is greater than romance—it is redemption.

📖 What Does the Bible Say About Choosing a Spouse?

Proverbs 18:22 says:

“He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.”

Marriage is not just about compatibility—it’s about calling. A godly spouse is a gift from God, not a prize we earn. And sometimes, He writes stories we never would’ve written ourselves—but they are always better.

💡 Three Biblical Lessons About Finding the Right Spouse

1. Put God First Before Anyone Else

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33

Our desire for a life partner should never outrun our desire for God. When we place Him first, He aligns our hearts and brings the right person at the right time.

2. Be Spiritually Yoked Together

“Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.” – 2 Corinthians 6:14

This verse is often misunderstood. It doesn’t mean we judge or reject someone too quickly. Instead, it challenges us to be faithful in our witness and trust that God can transform hearts—just as He did in my marriage.

3. Love Reflects God's Character

“Love is patient, love is kind... It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” – 1 Corinthians 13:4–7

A Christ-centered love doesn’t demand perfection—it practices grace, patience, and sacrificial love. These are the marks of a marriage that glorifies God.

🔍 A Challenge to Reflect

  • Are you praying for a partner that fits your checklist, or one who fits God’s will?

  • Are you willing to surrender your desires and trust in God’s better plan?

  • Could it be that God is preparing someone for you—and preparing you for someone—right now?

I challenge you to pray as Jesus did: “Not my will, but Yours be done.” (Luke 22:42) That surrender will shape not only your future relationship, but your whole life.
