Reality Unscripted: A Journey of Faith, Kindness, and Divine Protection

Life’s most profound lessons often emerge during unexpected challenges. Sometimes, these moments reveal not only the power of faith but also the significance of compassion. Let me share a story that happened to me in 2011—one that reminded me of God’s unwavering presence and how kindness can leave an impact far beyond what we imagine.

It was a typical day as I drove a passenger van-for-hire from Ormoc City to Palompon. Around 10:00 in the morning, as I neared Crossing Libongao, I prepared to make a left turn. When I pressed the brake pedal, I was horrified—the brakes had malfunctioned. Panic surged through me as I realized I couldn’t stop the van.

In that terrifying moment, with a van full of passengers, I silently prayed, “Lord, Thy will be done.” I surrendered everything to Him, knowing that only His guidance could bring us safely through. Miraculously, the brakes began to alternate between failing and working again. I quickly learned to time my braking to navigate the remaining 35 kilometers to Palompon.

By God’s grace, we reached our destination safely. It was a journey I will never forget—a testament to the power of prayer and divine intervention. From that day on, I resolved to always take extra precautions in my work and to rely on God’s guidance in every journey.

A Life of Giving on the Road

This experience also deepened my compassion for others, especially those in need. While driving my van, I often saw students waiting along the roadside. Many couldn’t afford the higher fares of vans compared to buses. I would stop, let them in, and charge them the same fare as the bus, even if it meant earning less. Some students couldn’t pay at all, but I let them ride anyway, trusting that helping them was the right thing to do.

One incident stood out. A year after my brake malfunction experience, I was preparing to drive from Ormoc to Villaba at 9:00 in the morning when a young woman approached the dispatcher asking for me. When we met, she thanked me and reminded me of a moment I had forgotten.

During her college days, she had once ridden in my van but had lost her small bag containing her tuition money. She couldn’t pay the fare, but I didn’t scold her or demand payment. Instead, I gave her ₱300 to help her get through the week.

Now, as a graduate, she returned to express her gratitude. Her success story reminded me that even small acts of kindness can ripple through someone’s life. Since then, other former passengers—many of them students—have approached me to repay fares or thank me for helping them during tough times.

A Reflection of Faith and Kindness

This story brings to mind the words of Jesus in Matthew 25:40, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for Me.”

Every act of kindness, no matter how small, is an opportunity to serve God and reflect His love. Sometimes, we may never see the results of our actions, but God sees everything. He works through us to touch lives in ways we may not even realize.

A Challenge for You

Life will always present opportunities to show compassion and faith. I challenge you to reflect on your own journey. Have you ever helped someone without expecting anything in return? Have you trusted God during your most challenging moments?

Here’s my challenge:

  1. Extend kindness to someone in need this week. It could be as simple as lending a hand, offering a word of encouragement, or helping someone financially if you can.
  2. Trust God in your trials. When faced with uncertainty, pause and pray, “Lord, Thy will be done.” Believe that He will guide you through.
  3. Be a source of inspiration. Share your own story of faith and kindness with others. You never know who might need to hear it.

Remember, even the smallest act of kindness can leave a lasting impact. Just as God protected me and used my simple acts of generosity to bless others, He can do the same through you. Step out in faith and be the light that someone else needs today.
