DAILY BREAD: NOVEMBER 21, 2024 / Ephesians 4:22-24 Put on the New Self: A Transformative Journey

Life is a series of choices. Each day, we decide who we will be, how we will act, and what kind of legacy we will leave behind. The Bible calls us to make one of the most important decisions: to put off our old self and embrace the new, as described in Ephesians 4:22-24:

"You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."

This passage offers a blueprint for transformation, urging us to leave behind our sinful nature and embrace a renewed identity in Christ.

The Old Self: A Life of Deceitful Desires

The "old self" represents the person we were before knowing Christ. It is marred by selfishness, pride, and worldly desires that lead to corruption. This old self may cling to grudges, fear change, and resist accountability. But the Apostle Paul reminds us that this life, though familiar, is ultimately destructive.

Think of it like shedding worn-out clothes after a long day. These garments may have served their purpose, but they are no longer suitable for the journey ahead. To hold on to them is to cling to the past rather than step boldly into the future God has prepared.

Be Made New in Your Mind

Transformation begins in the mind. Paul calls us to renew our thoughts, not just our behaviors. Why? Because real change starts from within.

  • Shift your perspective: See challenges not as roadblocks but as opportunities for growth.
  • Guard your thoughts: Let go of negativity, jealousy, and doubt. Instead, fill your mind with God's promises and affirmations.
  • Seek guidance: Regular prayer and Bible study are key to aligning your mind with God’s will.

Romans 12:2 echoes this truth: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." A renewed mind leads to a renewed life.

The New Self: A Reflection of God's Righteousness

Putting on the new self is not merely about turning over a new leaf—it’s about becoming more like Christ. This new identity is marked by righteousness, holiness, and love. It is living with integrity, extending grace to others, and shining as a light in a world of darkness.

To put on the new self:

  1. Embrace forgiveness: Let go of past hurts and forgive yourself and others.
  2. Live with purpose: Align your actions with God’s mission for your life.
  3. Cultivate virtues: Practice kindness, patience, humility, and self-control daily.

A Practical Example

Imagine a man struggling with anger. His old self lashes out at others, causing division in his relationships. But through Christ, he commits to renewing his mind. He prays for patience, seeks accountability from a trusted friend, and meditates on scriptures like Proverbs 15:1: "A gentle answer turns away wrath." Over time, his anger diminishes, and he becomes a source of peace and reconciliation.

This is what it means to put on the new self: to actively work towards Christlikeness in every area of life.

A Call to Action

The journey to putting on the new self is not always easy, but it is always worth it. Today, take a step forward:

  • Identify areas in your life where the old self still lingers.
  • Commit to renewing your mind daily through scripture and prayer.
  • Walk boldly in the righteousness and holiness that God has called you to.

As 2 Corinthians 5:17 reminds us, "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"

Step into your new self today. God’s grace is sufficient, His love is unending, and His power is ready to transform you from the inside out.
