DAILY BREAD: JANUARY 7, 2024 / Abraham: A Man of Faith and Promise

Have you ever wondered what it means to live by faith? To trust God in every situation, to obey his commands, and to love him with all your heart? If so, you are not alone. Many people struggle with these questions, especially in times of uncertainty and difficulty. But there is one person in the Bible who can inspire us and teach us how to live by faith: Abraham.

Abraham was the first of the Hebrew patriarchs and a figure revered by the three great monotheistic religions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. According to the biblical book of Genesis, Abraham left Ur, in Mesopotamia, because God called him to found a new nation in an undesignated land that he later learned was Canaan. He obeyed unquestioningly the commands of God, from whom he received repeated promises and a covenant that his “seed” would inherit the land

In this blogpost, we will explore the life of Abraham and the message he has for us today. We will see how he trusted God in difficult situations, how he obeyed God’s will, and how he loved God and others. We will also learn how we can follow his example and seek God’s best for ourselves and our families.
Abraham’s call and obedience

God called Abraham to leave his country, his people, and his father’s household and go to a land that God would show him. God also promised to make him a great nation, to bless him, and to make his name great. God said that through Abraham, all the families of the earth would be blessed (Genesis 12:1-3).

Abraham obeyed God without knowing where he was going or how God would fulfill his promise. He was 75 years old when he left his home with his wife Sarah, his nephew Lot, and all their possessions and servants. He traveled to the land of Canaan, where God appeared to him and confirmed his promise. Abraham built an altar there and worshiped God (Genesis 12:4-9).

We can learn from Abraham’s example to trust God and follow his leading in our lives, even when we don’t see the whole picture or understand the outcome. God has a plan and a purpose for each of us, and he will guide us and bless us as we obey him. We can also be a blessing to others as we share God’s love and truth with them.

Abraham’s faith and patience
God promised Abraham that he would have a son and that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. God also made a covenant with Abraham, promising to give him and his offspring the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession (Genesis 15:1-21).

Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness, even though he and his wife Sarah were old and childless. He did not doubt God’s power or faithfulness, but he waited patiently for God’s timing. He was 100 years old when Sarah gave birth to Isaac, the son of the promise (Genesis 21:1-7).
We can learn from Abraham’s example to believe God and his promises, even when they seem impossible or delayed. God is able to do more than we can ask or imagine, and he is faithful to his word. He will fulfill his promises in his perfect time and way. We can also rejoice and thank God for his goodness and grace in our lives.

Abraham’s sacrifice and surrender
God tested Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac, the son of the promise, on a mountain that God would show him. God said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you” (Genesis 22:2).

Abraham obeyed God and was willing to give up his most precious possession, trusting that God could raise him from the dead. He took Isaac, the wood, the fire, and the knife, and went to the place that God had shown him. He bound Isaac and laid him on the altar, and took the knife to slay him. But God stopped him and provided a ram instead of Isaac. God said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice” (Genesis 22:16-18).

We can learn from Abraham’s example to love God more than anything else and to surrender everything to him, trusting that he will provide and reward us. God does not want us to sacrifice our children, but he wants us to give him our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength. He wants us to love him with all that we are and have, and to obey him in everything. He also wants us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and to share his blessings with them.

Conclusion
Abraham’s life is an inspiration for us today. He shows us how to live by faith, obedience, patience, and surrender. He also reminds us that God is faithful to his promises, and that he can work through our weaknesses and mistakes. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and he is also our God.

Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, thank you for the life of Abraham and the lessons we can learn from him. Help us to follow his example of faith, obedience, patience, and surrender. Help us to trust you and your promises, even when we don’t see the whole picture or understand the outcome. Help us to love you more than anything else and to surrender everything to you, trusting that you will provide and reward us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
