DAILY BREAD: July 19, 2025 / Proverbs 16: 18 - The Danger of Pride

Hello, dear readers!

Today, I want to speak from the heart about an issue that silently destroys many lives, relationships, and even our walk with God—Pride. It’s easy to overlook, and even easier to justify. But Scripture warns us time and again that pride is not just a bad habit—it’s a spiritual danger.

As a preacher of God’s Word and a fellow traveler in the faith, I’ve seen how pride can creep into our hearts, even in the name of righteousness. That’s why we must stay vigilant and ask God daily to search and humble us.

📖 What Does the Bible Say About Pride?

Proverbs 16:18 gives us a sobering reminder:

"Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."

This verse reveals the truth: pride is not just unattractive—it leads to downfall. Whether it's pride in our achievements, opinions, titles, or even our spiritual maturity, when we elevate ourselves above others or above God, we are headed for a fall.

💡 Three Biblical Lessons About Pride

1. God Opposes the Proud but Gives Grace to the Humble

“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” – James 4:6

Pride doesn’t just create distance between people—it creates distance between us and God. When we walk in pride, we block His grace. But when we walk in humility, we receive His favor.

2. Pride Distorts Our View of Ourselves

“Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment.” – Romans 12:3

Pride tricks us into believing we are better, wiser, or more deserving than others. But the Bible reminds us to see ourselves through God’s eyes—not too highly, but with truth and grace.

3. Jesus Modeled True Humility

“Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges... and humbled himself in obedience to God.” – Philippians 2:6–8 (NLT)

The greatest example of humility is Jesus. He had every reason to boast—but instead, He stooped low, washed feet, and died for our sins. If our Savior humbled Himself, so should we.

🔍 A Challenge to Reflect

  • Are there areas in your life where pride is quietly growing?

  • Have you found yourself looking down on others, even subtly?

  • Are you quick to defend your ego but slow to ask for forgiveness?

Today, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any prideful attitudes in your heart. Lay them at the cross. Choose humility, not because it’s weak—but because it’s powerful in the Kingdom of God.
