Have you ever dreamed of a stairway to heaven? A way to reach the presence of God and see His glory? A path to connect with the heavenly realm and experience the divine?
That’s what Jacob saw in his dream, as recorded in Genesis 28:12:
He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it
Jacob was on the run from his brother Esau, who wanted to kill him for stealing his birthright and blessing. He was alone, afraid, and uncertain of his future. He had nothing but a stone for a pillow and the open sky for a roof. But in that dark and lonely night, God gave him a vision of hope and grace.
The stairway that Jacob saw was not a literal structure, but a symbol of God’s presence and provision. It showed him that God was with him, watching over him, and communicating with him. It also showed him that God had a plan for him, to bless him and make him a blessing to all nations. The angels that were going up and down the stairway were God’s messengers, carrying out His will and purposes.
The stairway to heaven was a glimpse of God’s grace for Jacob, who did not deserve it. He was a deceiver, a liar, and a cheat. He had broken his family and betrayed his brother. He had no claim to God’s favor or promises. But God chose to reveal Himself to him, to forgive him, and to renew His covenant with him. God changed his name from Jacob, which means “supplanter”, to Israel, which means “he struggles with God”. God transformed him from a schemer to a prince, from a fugitive to a patriarch.
But the stairway to heaven was not only for Jacob. It was also a foreshadowing of God’s grace for all of us, who need it. We are all sinners, who have fallen short of God’s glory and broken His law. We have no way to reach God or please Him by our own efforts. We are separated from Him by our guilt and shame. We need a mediator, a bridge, a stairway to heaven.
That stairway is Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Son of Man. He is the fulfillment of God’s promise to Jacob and to all who believe in Him. He is the true and living way to the Father, the only access to heaven. He is the Word of God, who became flesh and dwelt among us. He is the ladder of love, who came down from heaven to earth, to live, die, and rise again for our salvation. He is the Lord of hosts, who commands the angels and rules over all things. He is the King of glory, who ascended to heaven and sits at the right hand of God.
Jesus said to Nathanael, who was amazed by His knowledge of him:
“You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on’ the Son of Man.”
Jesus was referring to Jacob’s dream, and applying it to Himself. He was claiming to be the stairway to heaven, the link between God and man, the revelation of God’s grace. He was inviting Nathanael, and all of us, to follow Him and see the wonders of His love and power.
Do you want to see heaven open? Do you want to experience God’s presence and provision? Do you want to receive God’s forgiveness and blessing? Do you want to be part of God’s plan and purpose?
Then come to Jesus, the stairway to heaven. He is waiting for you, with open arms and a loving heart. He will welcome you, embrace you, and transform you. He will give you a new name, a new identity, and a new destiny. He will make you a child of God, a citizen of heaven, and a co-heir with Him.
He will show you the way, the truth, and the life. He will lead you to the Father, the Spirit, and the Church. He will fill you with joy, peace, and hope. He will be with you always, even to the end of the age.
He is the stairway to heaven, and He is calling you today. Will you answer Him? Will you trust Him? Will you follow Him?
He is the stairway to heaven, and He is the only way. Don’t miss Him. Don’t ignore Him. Don’t reject Him.
He is the stairway to heaven, and He is the best thing that ever happened to you. Embrace Him. Love Him. Worship Him.
He is the stairway to heaven, and He is your Savior, your Lord, and your King. Amen.
