In every corner of the world, there are individuals whose lives shine as a beacon of resilience, faith, and unwavering commitment to service. One such inspiring story is that of Joel Espanol Maturan. From humble beginnings in Bislig City to becoming a respected leader and entrepreneur, Joel's life is a testament to the power of perseverance, faith, and community service.
Early Life and Spiritual Foundation
Joel Espanol Maturan was born on February 5, 1982, in the serene town of Sta. Cruz, Bislig City, Surigao del Sur. He is the eldest child of Jessie Salbino Maturan and Anita Saludo Espanol and grew up with his siblings Jonathan, James, Khenn, Amor, Christine Joy, and Jasmine, who tragically passed away at the tender age of four.
Raised by his grandmother Juliana, Joel’s childhood was deeply rooted in the principles of the Southern Baptist faith. Sundays were sacred, not just for worship but also for service. During his high school years, Joel embraced a spiritual calling, dedicating himself to Bible teaching, preaching, and outreach missions in the remote Sitio Sanyata, San Roque, Bislig City. These experiences shaped his moral compass and instilled in him a lifelong commitment to uplifting others.
Academic Pursuits and Early Leadership
Joel pursued his Bachelor of Science in Forestry at the University of Southeastern Phillpines - Bislig, where he balanced his academic endeavors with public service. In 2002, during his third year in college, he was elected as Barangay Kagawad in Sta. Cruz. Despite the challenges of serving his community while completing his studies, Joel persevered.
His undergraduate journey was extended due to an incomplete thesis on the clonal propagation of Molave, a rigorous experimental research project that took two additional years to complete. He finally graduated on April 2, 2005, embodying the resilience and dedication that would define his future endeavors.
Building a Career and a Family
After graduation, Joel embarked on a professional journey that began as a stockman at Sari-Sari Store Group of Companies Inc. in Davao City in July 2005. By December of the same year, he transitioned to NCCC-Mall of Davao as a sales associate, later serving as an inventory clerk until May 2008.
Joel married Rechel Damalerio Gorillo, marking the beginning of a beautiful family life. They were blessed with two children: Norvile Kent, born on November 15, 2007, and Nyzille Kate, born on March 5, 2009.
In June 2008, Joel relocated his family to Hibulangan, Villaba, Leyte. There, he worked as an Account Officer for OFMPC-Villaba Branch from June 15, 2008, to March 2011. Following his resignation, he ventured into the transportation business, operating his own van-for-hire service until December 2011.
Empowering Communities Through Public Service
Joel’s passion for community service led him to join the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) under the KALAHI-CIDSS Program. From February 13, 2012, to July 14, 2014, he served as a Community Empowerment Facilitator, later advancing to Area Coordinator, a role he held until December 31, 2022.
