DAILY BREAD: July 20, 2025 / Proverbs 10:12 - The Destructive Power of Hatred

Hello, dear readers!

Today, we are going to reflect on a heavy but necessary topic—Hatred. It’s one of the most dangerous emotions we can hold onto, and yet, many hearts are secretly consumed by it. As a blogger who shares God’s Word, I feel led to talk about this not to condemn, but to remind us of God’s healing power over bitterness, anger, and resentment.

Hatred starts small—maybe from a wound, an offense, a betrayal—but when left unaddressed, it grows into something that steals joy, breaks relationships, and distances us from God. The Bible is clear: hatred is not of God.

📖 What Does the Bible Say About Hatred?

“Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness.”1 John 2:9

This verse hits hard. It reminds us that no matter how spiritual we think we are, if we harbor hatred, we are not walking in the light. Hatred cannot live where Christ reigns.

💡 Three Biblical Lessons About Hatred

1. Hatred Harms the One Who Holds It

“Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.”Proverbs 10:12

Hatred doesn't just affect the person we’re angry at—it damages us. It poisons our peace and invites the enemy to work in our minds. Only love has the power to end the cycle of offense.

2. God Commands Us to Love Our Enemies

“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”Matthew 5:44

Jesus didn’t just tell us to love the lovable—He challenged us to love the hardest people in our lives. This kind of love is only possible through the Holy Spirit. But it is a command, not a suggestion.

3. Forgiveness Is the Antidote to Hatred

“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”Colossians 3:13

We forgive not because they deserve it, but because we were forgiven first. When we choose to forgive, we break the chains of hatred and walk in the freedom of Christ.

🔍 A Challenge to Reflect

  • Is there someone you still hold anger, bitterness, or hatred toward?

  • Have you asked God to help you let go—not just with words, but with your heart?

  • What would it look like to forgive that person as Christ forgave you?

Hatred may feel justified, especially if we’ve been deeply wronged. But healing begins the moment we lay down our right to hate and pick up the call to love. That’s where true victory begins.
