Daily Bread | Courageous Faith: Lessons from the Life of Joshua

Scripture Reading:
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
— Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

Devotional Reflection
Transition often reveals our deepest fears. When Moses died, Joshua stood at a crossroads—tasked with leading Israel into the Promised Land, carrying a responsibility far greater than his own strength. God did not give Joshua a detailed battle plan at first. Instead, He gave him a command and a promise: be strong, be courageous, and trust My presence.

Courage, in biblical terms, is not the absence of fear. It is obedience in spite of fear. Joshua likely felt overwhelmed, uncertain, and inadequate. Yet God did not base Joshua’s success on military skill or leadership experience. The foundation of victory was God’s abiding presence.

Many of us face our own “Jordan Rivers”—decisions, responsibilities, and seasons that demand bold faith. Like Joshua, we may hesitate because we see our limitations more clearly than God’s power. But God’s assurance remains unchanged: “I will be with you wherever you go.”

Life Application
Courageous faith means stepping forward when God calls, even when the outcome is unclear. It means trusting that obedience invites God’s presence, and God’s presence guarantees strength.

Ask yourself today:
Where is God calling me to be courageous?
What fear or discouragement is holding me back?
Am I relying on my ability, or on God’s promise?

True courage grows when we anchor our confidence in God, not circumstances.

Prayer
Lord God, You know the fears I carry and the challenges before me. Teach me to be strong and courageous, not because of my own strength, but because You walk with me. Help me trust Your presence wherever You lead. In Jesus’ name, In Jesus name, Amen.
